NS PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE RESPONSE - UNITED FISHERIES CONSERVATION ALLIANCE

I am pleased to respond to our questionnaire as follows:

1. Do you believe the excessive localized fishing pressure introduced by the launch of unregulated moderate livelihood fisheries has the potential to have a harmful effect on the conservation of stocks?

Any good fisheries policy has conservation at its core. The Liberal Government in Ottawa needs to explain how a moderate livelihood fishery will be conducted in concert with the commercial fishery.

2. Do you believe it is essential that every community, association, and fisher in the Atlantic Fishery, whether they be indigenous or non-indigenous, abide by the science-based rules and regulations that have been established by DFO to ensure the conservation and proper management of our fisheries for future generations?

We believe in science-based solutions. We also believe that the Liberal government in Ottawa should provide clear and immediate guidance on how a moderate livelihood fishery can operate within a conservation framework.

3. Do you believe that fish caught in unregulated moderate livelihood fisheries operating outside the science-based rules and regulations that have been established by the DFO should be exempt from the provincial rules related to the buying, processing, or selling of fish?

The current regulations prohibit the processing of unlicensed, unregulated, and out-of-season harvests. We will ensure that those regulations remain in place.

4. If elected, do you commit to increasing the provincial resources for the enforcement of the rules related to the buying, processing, or selling of fish caught in unregulated moderate livelihood fisheries operating outside the science-based rules and regulations that have been established by the DFO?

We are committed to pressuring the Liberal Government in Ottawa to do their job and define a moderate livelihood. We are committed to providing the resources required for the proper enforcement of provincial regulations.

Sincerely,

Cameron MacKeen,
Campaign Co-Chair PC Party of Nova Scotia
