MEDIA RELEASE: UFCA takes legal action seeking $10 million in damages for the illegal buying and selling of lobster

Halifax, NS - The Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance (UFCA), representing lobster fishing associations throughout Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI, has filed a Notice of Action with the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia against Independent Fisheries Limited and its president, Xiaoming Mao, of Sable River, Shelburne County, for the buying of illegal lobsters caught in St. Mary’s Bay. “UFCA has obtained the necessary evidence to clearly link Independent Fisheries to the buying of illegal and unauthorized lobsters landed at the Saulnierville Wharf,” said Colin Sproul, UFCA President.

The Notice of Action, filed by Richard Norman of the law firm Cox & Palmer, also names Jason Lamrock, Tyler Nickerson of Fisher Direct Ltd and Seawell Holdings Ltd and Wesley Nickerson as being parties to the illegal activity. UFCA alleges all of the defendants are engaged in a conspiracy to violate the Fisheries Act and cause damage to the regulated, commercial fishery.
